The Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA) is inviting all residents and community members to participate in the Green Up Clean Up litter clean-up, recycling, and beautification event Saturday, September 24 at three family developments in Canton: Jackson Sherrick 9:00- 11:00 a.m.; Linwood Acres 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.; and Ellisdale Homes 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.

The Green Up Clean Up initiative coordinated by SMHA and sponsored by grants from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, for anti-litter awareness efforts and litter management; Stark Community Foundation, for children’s educational programming; and Stark-Wayne-Tuscarawas Joint Solid Waste Management District, for recycling educational materials. The city of Canton Community and Economic Development department also has partnered with SMHA by donating grocery gift cards to be distributed to participating SMHA residents.

The event will include bulb planting around the management offices and in flower beds at each location, the construction of a garden and planting of fall root vegetables, as well as educational activities for children which focus on the importance of caring for the Earth, recycling, and gardening. Food will be provided and children will receive a gift bag and t-shirt.

Ashley Wright, Communications Manager for SMHA stated, “We are so pleased to be hosting an event which is a collaborative effort between governmental agencies and local community partners which benefit the residents living at SMHA’s family sites. It is our goal to provide our residents with engaging and educational experiences where they can learn more about environmental awareness and ultimately, actively participate in making their communities more vibrant.”
