Legal Services Department
Using an array of strategies developed during nearly a decade of working within Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA), Legal Department provides the critical and tactical guidance that aligns with inter-agency departmental management plans based on SMHA’s clear goals and objectives. Being responsible for all legal matters, the Legal Department represents SMHA in all aspects of legal proceedings and program operations. As such, it is the role of the Legal Department to ensure compliance with the Department of Housing and Urban Development rules in addition to local, state, and federal laws. In doing so, the Legal Department must interact with internal departments, external subject matter experts, regional and national offices, outside counsel, consultants, and government and regulatory bodies; including essential community stakeholder interaction. Other services include, but are not limited to, contract negotiating and drafting, managing outside legal professional services, implementing cost-saving strategies in addition to assisting in development projects, private non-profit organizational matters and processing public records requests. The Legal Department also manages SMHA’s Section 504 responsibilities inclusive of assisting residents with Reasonable Accommodation requests.
