Legal Services Department
The Legal Services Department supports the agency’s efforts to administer housing programs fairly, consistently, and in accordance with HUD requirements and applicable laws. SMHA works with outside legal counsel and internal staff to address matters involving lease enforcement, evictions, reasonable accommodations, violence against women protections (VAWA), emergency transfers, and regulatory compliance.
The department assists residents and applicants by reviewing requests for reasonable accommodations, administering VAWA protections and emergency transfer requests, and coordinating legal processes related to lease violations and evictions. SMHA is committed to ensuring equal access to housing programs while protecting the rights, health, and safety of residents and maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
