Denita Johnson
Executive Director
Since February 1, 2024, Denita Johnson has serves as the Executive Director of the Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA).
With over 30 years of experience in public administration and the housing industry, Denita is a dynamic leader known for driving major initiatives and achieving organizational goals through strategic planning, rigorous assessment, and team alignment. She has a proven track record in policy development, fiscal management, and housing operations, with a strong focus on compliance in both subsidized and private sectors. Her expertise includes managing large-scale projects, securing significant funding, and handling complex initiatives such as the emergency relocation of vulnerable populations.
Before joining SMHA, Denita held key leadership positions at Durham Housing Authority (DHA) as Chief Operating Officer and Director of the Housing Choice Voucher Program. At DHA, she managed substantial budgets and maintained high-performance ratings. Her tenure at Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) further solidified her reputation for excellence, where she achieved High Performer status for 11 consecutive years and played a pivotal role in reducing audit findings, resulting in substantial cost savings.
Denita holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on Finance from Kent State University and a Master of Science in Executive Management from Indiana Wesleyan University. She is also a Fellow of the Cleveland State University Leadership program and holds certifications in Public Housing Management and Section 8 Executive Management, among other credentials.
In addition to her professional achievements, Denita has served in various capacities on committees for the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) and the Board of Governors, as well as on the Workforce Development Durham Board. Her leadership skills are widely recognized across the industry, making her a respected figure in housing and community development.
