The Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA) is a public nonprofit
organization, chartered by the State of Ohio, funded in part through the United
States Department of Housing & Urban Development to provide subsidized
housing and resident initiative programs for eligible citizens of Stark County.
The SMHA operates in accordance with the Federal Fair Housing Law. It is the
policy of SMHA to house persons without regard to race, color, religion, sex,
family status, handicap, or national origin.
We are not just about bricks and mortar. We believe that going that extra mile
to ensure the quality of life is good for all residents. We want our residents
to live productive lives. Our standards are high, but to succeed in life, you
cannot expect anything less than the very best that one can do.
The SMHA is operated by a five (5) member Board of Commissioners. These members
are appointed for a five (5) year term and are not compensated for their
services. The Mayor of Canton (the largest city in Stark County) appoint two
members, the Stark County Commissioners appoint one member, the Stark County
Court of Common Pleas appoints one member and the Stark County Court of Common
Pleas, Probate Division, appoints one member. The current SMHA Board of
Commissioners are:
